The concept of mock-up, which share with the drawing the expressive synthesis for the analysis of the architectural form and evolution, is an invaluable asset for the preservation of the heritage. To mark the 175th anniversary of the Práxedes Mateo Sagasta’s secondary school of Logroño (Spain), an exhibition about the history of the institution was organized at the premises of La Rioja Library. The current school building became operational in 1900 and was built on the former site of a Carmelite convent. In fact, the convent rooms were the first location for the school, after the expropriations of religious communities during the mid-19th century. For the benefit of the aforementioned exhibition, it was considered interesting to generate a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction of the convent buildings to show how it would have looked. However, the lack of sufficient contemporary graphic information was a challenge, so it was decided that an efficient solution would be to generate the virtual reconstruction from a paper craft model, which had been created by the librarian of the secondary school as a result of his research on this matter. This text describes the 3D modelling of that cut-out element by means of monoscopic photogrammetry (perspective drawing) and the use of non-realistic rendering based on the appearance of the paper mock-up (and not trying to recreate the real image of the buildings) so as to provide a suggestive view of the convent and create interactive exhibition items. Moreover, the text deals with the long-term preservation and the improvement of the re-use of the 3D models. The former by resorting to institutional repositories —from which users can download the full detailed versions— and the latter employing versions able to be visualized in 3D warehouses (such as Sketchfab) and augmented reality (AR) applications. Highlights: • A significant part of the architectural heritage is represented by mock-ups of different materials (paper, wood, metal and so on). • Virtual modelling and augmented reality (AR) can be appropriate tools for materializing, recovering and disseminating scale models to the public. • Techniques for geometric documentation and visual representation need to be adapted in order to tackle the peculiar features of these elements (size, materials, fragility, etc.).

3. Rule-based perspective rectification for Chinese text in natural scene images.

Recognizing text with large perspective deformation is challenging, especially when the orientation of the text is arbitrary. A rule-based method is proposed in this paper to recover the fronto-parallel image for Chinese text in natural scenes. It relies on the fact that there are many horizontal and vertical strokes in Chinese text and they are accurately or approximately perpendicular to each other in non-italic type. A homography is utilized to describe the relationship between the scene text and its image. Horizontal and vertical strokes are extracted and selected to construct perspective quadrilaterals and the expected rectangles for calculating the homography. Experiments show that the proposed method could rectify the perspective deformation of Chinese text in any orientation effectively and it outperforms the state-of-the-art perspective rectification method based on vanishing point detection. 5. An Interactive Perspective Scene Completion Framework Guided by Complanate Mesh.

TOPOLOGY - Abstract
This paper presents an efficient interactive framework for perspective scene completion and editing tasks, which are available largely in the real world but rarely studied in the field of image completion. Considering that it is quite hard to extract perspective information from a single image, this work starts from a friendly and portable interactive platform to obtain the basic perspective data. Then, in order to make this interface less sensitive, easier and more flexible, a perspective-rectification based correction mechanism is proposed to iteratively update the locations of the initial points selected by users. At last, a complanate mesh is generated by the geometry calculations from these corrected initial positions. This mesh must approximate the perspective direction and the structure topology as much as possible so that the filling process can be conducted under the constraint of the perspective effects of the original image. Our experiments show the results with good qualities and performances, and also demonstrate the validity of our approaches by various perspective scenes and images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Interactive virtual representation of the disappeared convent of El Carmen (Logroño) generated from a paper craft model
- Abstract
[EN] The concept of mock-up, which share with the drawing the expressive synthesis for the analysis of the architectural form and evolution, is an invaluable asset for the preservation of the heritage. To mark the 175th anniversary of the Práxedes Mateo Sagasta’s secondary school of Logroño (Spain), an exhibition about the history of the institution was organized at the premises of La Rioja Library. The current school building became operational in 1900 and was built on the former site of a Carmelite convent. In fact, the convent rooms were the first location for the school, after the expropriations of religious communities during the mid-19th century. For the benefit of the aforementioned exhibition, it was considered interesting to generate a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction of the convent buildings to show how it would have looked. However, the lack of sufficient contemporary graphic information was a challenge, so it was decided that an efficient solution would be to generate the virtual reconstruction from a paper craft model, which had been created by the librarian of the secondary school as a result of his research on this matter. This text describes the 3D modelling of that cut-out element by means of monoscopic photogrammetry (perspective drawing) and the use of non-realistic rendering based on the appearance of the paper mock-up (and not trying to recreate the real image of the buildings) so as to provide a suggestive view of the convent and create interactive exhibition items. Moreover, the text deals with the long-term preservation and the improvement of the re-use of the 3D models. De hecho, la primera sede del instituto estuvo situada en las dependencias de este mismo convento, tras la desamortización de los edificios eclesiásticos que tuvo lugar a mediados del siglo XIX. Como parte de la muestra, se consideró interesante generar una reconstrucción virtual tridimensional (3D) de los edificios del convento con el fin de mostrar cómo debieron haber sido. 15. Calibration of Ultrawide Fisheye Lens Cameras by Eigenvalue Minimization.

We present a new technique for calibrating ultrawide fisheye lens cameras by imposing the constraint that collinear points be rectified to be collinear, parallel lines to be parallel, and orthogonal lines to be orthogonal. Exploiting the fact that line fitting reduces to an eigenvalue problem in 3D, we do a rigorous perturbation analysis to obtain a practical calibration procedure. Doing experiments, we point out that spurious solutions exist if collinearity and parallelism alone are imposed. Our technique has many desirable properties. For example, no metric information is required about the reference pattern or the camera position, and separate stripe patterns can be displayed on a video screen to generate a virtual grid, eliminating the grid point extraction processing. The image processing required to enable the reading task is a composition of several important sub-tasks, such as image capture, image stabilization, image enhancement and page-curl dewarping region segmentation, regions grouping, and word recognition In this paper we deal with some of these sub-tasks in an effort to prototype a device (Tyflos-reader) that will read a document for a person with a visual impairment and respond to voice commands for control. 17. Perspective Rectification of Integral Images Produced Using Hexagonal Lens Arrays.

Nowadays a plethora of three-dimensional (3D) systems claim users' increasing preference for delivering 3D content. In recent years an increasing number of systems utilize autostereoscopic techniques and hence provide glasses free viewing and adequate resolutions in full color. In addition certain autostereoscopic techniques like Integral Imaging provide two-dimensional (2D) parallax and further increase anticipation for high fidelity 3D content viewing to professional and home users. In this paper we extend the results of previous research to provide perspective distortion rectification for Integral Images generated using hexagonal instead of square lenses. In the proposed method we demonstrate the utilization of a fundamental property of distorted coplanar hexagonal lattices in the image rectification framework that improve the rectification accuracy and robustness. Finally we provide experimental results over a number of images to evaluate the accuracy of the method using objective metrics. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
Real-world text on street signs, nameplates, etc. often lies in an oblique plane and hence cannot be recognized by traditional OCR systems due to perspective distortion. Furthermore, such text often comprises only one or two lines, preventing the use of existing perspective rectification methods that were primarily designed for images of document pages. We propose an approach that reliably rectifies and subsequently recognizes individual lines of text. Our system, which includes novel algorithms for extraction of text from real-world scenery, perspective rectification, and binarization, has been rigorously tested on still imagery as well as on MPEG-2 video clips in real time.
